VIKING-AGE WHALEBONE PLAQUE AND SMOOTHER

A rough plank of slightly splalted chestnut is smoothed down by hand Referring to a print-out of the original, the design is sketched out on the timber The basic shape is roughed out using hand drills and chisels The sides are cleaned up and shaped with chisels and gouges The finished timber is then decorated with sharp chisels to match the original

The original plaque was carved out of whalebone. It was used as a linen smoother; the green object in the picture is a flattened glass device. It is essentially an ironing board, but for well-to-do Vikings.

The final plaque was treated with several washes of various mixes to create the effect of whalebone, as the client expressly needed to avoid using that material.
